The 33rd Summer Olympic Games - or simply Paris 2024 - came back to the capital of France after the 1900 and 1924 Games.
Developments of the past century were reflected in the focus of the Games’ organizers: gender equality and sustainability. The Paris Games also stood out with their Opening Ceremony - for the first time in modern Olympic history, the ceremony was held outside of a stadium. River Seine became the venue.
Olympics are a global event, raising a lot of interest but also some controversies. This dashboard deliberately focus on sport achievements only.

This section looks on twelve coaches responsible for the biggest number of athletes. Team spots (such as baskteball or football) were intentionally left out. It turns out that big training groups are common especially in rowing.
It is not rare for athletes not to represent the country they were born in. This figure looks at the most frequent transfers among participants of the PAris 2024 Olympics. Note that a contributor to change in nationality is also breakup of countries such as in case of Yugoslavia.
Many athletes suceeded in more than one event and this section highlights these achievements. Included are all medalists with at least two medals (from individual or team events).
The Olympic Torch Relay started traditionally in Olympia, Greece (on April 16) and from there, traveled by sea to Marseille, France, arriving on May 8. Upon the torch’ arrival to France, followed a 68-day journey across 65 French territories. During this period, the flame visited six overseas territories (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Réunion) and passed through over 400 towns. Approximately 10,000 torchbearers participated, covering an average of 200 meters each. The relay concluded with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron at the Opening Ceremony on July 26, 2024.
I started this project to practice use of Quarto dashboards and deployment to public. Besides some of my favourite packages, I aimed to use packages and visualizations that I did not have a chance to use for my work yet.
Inspirations:
The Internet is full of useful and inspiring resources which I probably used without being truly aware. Nonetheless, there are video tutorials and inspirational people I would like to mention:
- A dashborad tutorial by Melissa Van Bussel (ggnot2)
- A tutorial series by Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel (Posit)
- Numerous tips and tutorials by Yan Holtz, Albert Rapp, Isabella Velásquez, and others
